Plastic surgery and Women
My theme or issue I decided to research is plastic surgeries and women who go through them to impress their man or just any man. In 2007 a roughly $14 billion dollars was spent on plastic surgery, according to Tom Hooyman, who’s a health care administration professor. I would like to find out why so much is being spent. Most women say it’s to make them happy within themselves. However, others say it’s to impress their love one. What interests me about this is how women and some men think that they have to look a certain way to impress someone else. As we grow up our elders, tell us that we are beautiful and should love being young. In addition, they tell us that we should want to look young all our lives. Therefore, as women grow older they think that they have to look young, in order to hear that they are pretty.
I haven’t came up with a research question yet. I don’t really know what to look at. I what to explore the different types of surgeries women undergo. In addition, I want to explore why they undergo certain surgeries. Plastic surgery is also known as cosmetic surgery. In this research, I hope to find the reasons behind plastic surgery and why women spend so much money on getting them.
In a society where looking young is of paramount importance we spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars each year in order to ensure our appearance is as good as possible. For this reason many now opt for cosmetic surgery which can offer a perfect solution and give us the self confidence we yearn for. Learn more:

HI Jerann,
ReplyDeleteYou have identified your assumptions for this topic, but let's move more toward what you have found. Identify specific reasons for why women have these procedures. There can be many reasons, but what have you found...these can also include your assumptions; however, if you find that your assumptions do not represent what you have found in your research, you may need to modify your assumptions. I'd agree that women have surgeries for one of two reasons (1) because they are doing it for someone else (e.g. probably a man) or (2) to be happy with themselves. What these assumptions have in common is that they are not done for this woman's terms. The question you may want to think about is what outside factors influence a woman to feel about herself. What is ideal beauty for white women? For African American women? Look at Jessica Valenti's argument in Chapter 4.
